A specialty of dentistry that deals with the diagnosis, prevention and correction of malpositioned teeth and jaws is called orthodontics. 

The main aim of orthodontics is, contrary to popular belief, not just the ‘aesthetics’ or ‘aligned teeth’,  but rather correctly positioned teeth, which is important for the health of the entire masticatory system, temporomandibular joint, and the orofacial system as a whole. The correct position of teeth in the jaw and the proper relationship between the upper and lower jaw, allow for a smooth flow of masticatory forces, protecting not just the supporting tissue of the teeth and teeth themselves from overload, but reducing or even eliminating the problems of the TMJ.

It is easy to maintain a good oral hygiene of correctly positioned teeth, which further reduces the chances of onset of dental caries (tooth decay) and periodontal problems. 
There is no age limit for orthodontist therapy or wearing fixed braces – any time is a good time for a beautiful smile.
